We have talked about compatibility, as well as the best and worst love matches. But we haven’t talked much about what makes for a good friendship — or squad. We touched on it briefly in the solar opposite and descendant articles, but we didn’t go into depth.
So today we are going to talk about which signs make the best friend squads. Each squad will have a cardinal, fixed, and mutable sign. I’ll also throw in a fourth sign because all good squads come in fours.

The Adventure Squad – Aries, Scorpio, Gemini, and Taurus
This squad is up for anything. They can stay out all night and paint the town red. Or they can turn a simple trip to the grocery store into a three-hour excursion. So why does this squad get along so well?
What does Aries bring to the squad? As the cardinal sign of the adventure squad, Aries is quite the trailblazer. They always have great ideas for group outings, though those ideas are not always well thought out. Because they are so vivacious and optimistic, they can keep spirits high.
What does Scorpio bring to the squad? Scorpio and Aries have similar energies because they share a ruling planet, though Mars is technically Scorpio’s ancient ruler. Scorpio is just as passionate and driven as Aries, and as a fixed water sign, they can support the fire sign’s wild ideas as well as provide emotional support for the whole squad.
What does Gemini bring to the squad? Every adventure squad needs a DM, or Dungeon Master. I said earlier that Aries does not always think their plans through; that is where the adaptable mutable sign steps in. Gemini is up for anything, but they do like to have a clear agenda for their adventures so that plans don’t get derailed.
Who is this squad missing? Just as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles needed Leonardo, the adventure squad needs an earth sign to keep them grounded. That is where the dependable yet fun Taurus steps in. They are strong like Aries, passionate like Scorpio, and kind-hearted like Gemini. A wacky adventure squad needs a mom-friend to make sure they don’t get too wacky.
The Creative Squad – Cancer, Leo, Virgo, and Gemini
This squad is always ready to take on a new project. They love to pursue individual artistic endeavors, and yet they’re always willing to collaborate. But why do they collaborate so well together?
What does Cancer bring to the squad? As the cardinal sign of the creative squad, Cancer always has a fun project in mind. They are also able to keep the rest of their squad on task. They like it when their creative genius is acknowledged, sure, but they love taking on artistic endeavors where their friends can shine as well.
What does Leo bring to the squad? Well, every band needs a front man. Cancer may write the songs, but Leo sings them. It is no secret that Leo loves the spotlight. But as a fixed sign, they always make sure to share the spotlight with the ones they love. Since Leo is ruled by the sun, which governs our energy, they can bring warmth and vitality to the group.
What does Virgo bring to the squad? None of the squad’s creative projects would get off the ground if not for the industrious Virgo. That is why they need the capable Gemini. They are innovative like Cancer, fun like Leo, and adaptable like Virgo. A creative squad sometimes needs a fresh pair of eyes who can offer a different perspective.
The Social Squad – Libra, Taurus, Pisces, and Leo
This squad is the popular group. But they’re not popular like the Plastics in Mean Girls. They’re popular because you can’t help but be charmed by them. But how do they manage to charm each other?
What does Libra bring to the squad? Every social squad needs a diplomatic leader, and that is where the cardinal sign, Libra, comes in. Libra is truly the glue that holds their friends together. They are the quintessential peacekeepers and can get along or at the very least find common ground with everyone.
What does Taurus bring to the squad? Taurus and Libra are both ruled by Venus, the planet of love and luxury, so they are both people-persons who love to indulge in creature comforts. While Libra is busy trying to make everyone happy, the wholesomely hedonistic Taurus steps in and reminds Libra that their happiness and pleasure matter too.
What does Pisces bring to the squad? You can’t have a sociable squad without an empathetic mutable sign. That is why sweet-natured Pisces is so important to this group. Libra tends to the group’s social needs and Taurus tends to the group’s material needs, but Pisces tends to the group’s emotional needs.
Who is this squad missing? Just like Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte needed Samantha, the social squad needs a passionate fire sign to make this group shine. That is why this group needs a friend like Leo. Leos are amicable like Libra, hedonistic like Taurus, and warm-hearted like Pisces. A popular group needs a fun wildcard!
Also, can you imagine Sex and the City without Samantha? That would be awful.
The Intellectual Squad – Capricorn, Aquarius, Sagittarius, and Pisces
These signs are quite intelligent, but not in a condescending way… well, not too condescending. When they combine their collective brain power, this squad is utterly unstoppable. But why does this study group work so well together?
What does Capricorn bring to the squad? As cardinal signs, Capricorns are fiercely protective of the ones that they love. They will go out of their way to ensure that their loved ones make safe and wise decisions. They are also incredibly charismatic and can hold their friends’ attention with witty anecdotes and charming perspectives.
What does Aquarius bring to the squad? Aquarius and Capricorn have many traits in common because they share a ruling planet, though Saturn is technically Aquarius’ ancient ruler. Saturn rules our sense of responsibility. And whereas Capricorn is concerned with personal responsibility, Aquarius is concerned with social responsibility, meaning their responsibility for the needs of the group. Also, the fixed air sign is quite innovative, and intellect is nothing without imagination.
What does Sagittarius bring to the squad? Discussing observable facts and communal needs is important, but philosophical Sagittarius brings some much-needed fun to the group. The mutable fire sign reminds their friends that they don’t always have to discuss objective truths. Sometimes it can be fun to ponder metaphysical theories.
So who is this squad missing? Compassion is just as important as critical thinking. And while Aquarius is quite compassionate, this intellectual group needs a healthy dose of empathy. Thank Neptune, they have Pisces. Pisces is charming like Capricorn, imaginative like Aquarius, and worldly like Sagittarius. A squad prone to hubris needs a dose of humanity.
