I Am the Storm: In Defense of Aquarius

Are Aquarians quirky outsiders who isolate themselves away from the world? Or are they idealistic visionaries who need freedom to find their truth?

We all have our preconceived notions about certain zodiac signs. I mean, I write articles based on some of these notions. Some of the conceptions are so deeply ingrained in us that we end up treating people a certain way.

I have had people physically and deliberately walk away from me when they learn that I’m an Aries. (We are nice, I promise!) Are these beliefs warranted? There must be a kernel of truth to them, right? Well, let’s discuss it.

Today, we are going to talk about stereotypes most commonly attributed to Aquarius. Are they quirky outsiders who isolate themselves away from the world? Or are they idealistic visionaries who want to understand the world and people around them?

Aquarius: The Revolutionary of the Zodiac

Picture an Aquarius in your head. You might be picturing a bookish type that has trouble relating to other people. Or maybe you are picturing an outspoken activist who uses their intellect and brash communicative skills to sway others to their side. Either way, they are lone wolves who are more than happy to go their own way rather than going with the flow.

Aquarians are rebellious, reckless, and revolutionary. They do whatever they can to fight against the status quo. They are so happy with their “outsider” reputation that they willingly compare themselves to extraterrestrials, and don’t mind when others do it as well. Aquarians don’t stand out in a crowd like a Leo. They would rather not be a part of the crowd at all.

Because of this oppositional nature, they can have trouble relating to others. People often believe that Aquarians are standoffish and apathetic. As a fixed air sign, they are often misunderstood and have difficulty understanding others. That is why they are more comfortable dedicating time to their scholarly interests rather than social events.

But is this assumption fair or true? And even if it is true, is that the whole story? I believe that there is more to the radical sign. Aquarians are not extraterrestrials. They are thunderstorms. They are ominous and misunderstood. But they are also helpful and comforting. Read on and find out more about the air signs’ stormy nature.

As air signs, Aquarians often get stereotyped as intellectual, and in some cases, even nerdy. They enjoy learning new things, but they tend to dedicate their time to subjects that fascinate them. In school, rather than maintaining a class average, they may excel in some classes while falling short in others. In terms of occupation, Aquarians prefer freelance work or jobs where they can work one on one with a client or customer. Being in a workspace with a lot of coworkers may be a tad bit overwhelming for them. They also enjoy volunteer work especially if it is for a worthy cause. They are always happy to donate their time for activism.

Aquarians are ruled by Uranus, the planet of innovation. So they enjoy a work environment where they can think outside the box.

An emotionally unevolved Aquarian will have trouble communicating effectively with colleagues or those who work underneath them. This may sound strange because air signs are usually very communicative, so I’ll explain. For the emotionally unevolved Aquarian, their reserved nature and lack of conflict resolution skills will supersede their communicative skills. Instead of talking to a colleague directly, they may send out a vague, passive-aggressive office memo.

An emotionally evolved Aquarian actively listens to their work colleagues and takes their individual needs and issues into consideration. An Aquarian can be a powerful work ally due to their non-judgmental attitude. However, like I mentioned earlier, an emotionally evolved Aquarian may not want to work with many colleagues given their independent nature.

Aquarius in Love

When it comes to romance, Aquarians need a lot of freedom. That does not necessarily mean sexual freedom, though in some cases it can. Aquarians need freedom in order to be themselves. If they feel like they have to change an integral part of themselves to make their partner love them more, they can become restless or resentful. In terms of love, Aquarians live by the phrase “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Spending time with their partner allows them to appreciate their alone time. And their alone time helps them appreciate time spent with their partner. An ideal partner for an Aquarian is someone who is happy to engage in parallel play. Meaning they are able to do their own thing while sharing the same space.

An immature Aquarian gets very angry when their partner does not understand them while simultaneously not taking the time to understand their partner. They believe that rather than expressing their emotions, their partner should just be able to read their cues and adjust accordingly.

A mature Aquarian takes time to understand their partner’s emotions as well as their own. A common misconception about Aquarians is that they are emotionally restrained. In reality, Aquarians usually have a raging storm of thoughts, ideas, and emotions jumping around in their head at any given time. They want to be able to communicate these emotions in a clear, concise way, but it can be difficult when you are feeling and trying to make sense of so many things. A mature Aquarian takes time to examine and communicate each emotion to their partner so that they can better understand each other, and they encourage their partner to do the same. Constant communication and active listening are the ingredients for a healthy Aquarian relationship. Or really any relationship.

Aquarius and Friendship

As I said earlier, Aquarians’ tendency to tighten the floodgates around their ever-growing emotions can lead people to believe that they are standoffish. But if you take the time to get to know these open-minded outcasts, you will learn just how compassionate and emotionally in-tune they really are. They may not always text you back right away and they may need to self-isolate every so often for the sake of their own mental and emotional health. But they are always in your corner and ready to support you and fight by your side.

A juvenile Aquarian may try their best to communicate their feelings to the best of their abilities. This is admirable, especially if they have struggled with expressing themselves in the past. However, dumping their emotions out for the world to see without first examining them themselves can be classified more as word-vomit rather than emotional growth. And they may get upset when they continue to be misunderstood.

A more considerate Aquarian talks through their emotions rather than just dumping them out. They like to have long talks with their friends with questions and tangents to get to the root of their problems. They prefer small, intellectual get-togethers or attending protests with their friends over loud, raging parties.

Just as storms are beneficial to the air around us and the soil beneath us, Aquarians can have an unexpectedly positive influence on the lives around them. Like storms, Aquarians can help their loved ones grow. Also like storms, not everyone will like or appreciate Aquarians. But many will find them beautiful and comforting.
