Fall is here, people! Well, it’s almost here, depending on where you are in the world. The days are getting shorter, the temperature is dropping, and it’s finally time to start wearing cool-weather clothes.
But, while we can finally say hello to coats, sweatshirts, boots, and sweaters, this doesn’t mean we have to completely abandon our summer clothes altogether!
From what to wear to how to change up your closet, here are some tips on transitioning your closet from summer to fall.
Layers, Layers, and More Layers
The key to successfully dressing for fall weather is to just add layers. You don’t need to completely change out your closet or pack away your summer clothes until June rolls around. Just find creative, flattering ways to layer pieces you love.
For example, wear your favorite summer dress to your friend’s baby shower in October, but add a leather jacket over it to make it work for the season.
It’s a good idea to invest in a couple of neutral cardigans that you can easily throw on over your favorite blouse or a simple t-shirt. Fall temperatures can be all over the place, so it’s always smart to wear clothes that are transitional.
Fall Colors Galore
Another simple way to transition your closet from summer to fall is to just change up your colors! While the whole “don’t wear white after Labor Day” notion is completely outdated, there is something fun about diving headfirst into a fall color scheme.
Burgundy, olive green, camel, and navy are all fantastic colors to wear during the fall, so incorporate those hues into your wardrobe. For example, a camel-colored trench coat is a great piece to have on hand, as is a simple navy dress. You never know when they may come in handy!
See Ya, Sandals
As October inches closer and closer, I think it’s time we all finally pack away our sandals until next year. However, this doesn’t mean we have to immediately pull out our snow boots and heavy-duty shoes.
In fact, fall is the perfect time to wear those in-between shoes. You know, the ones that don’t quite fit into one particular season? I’m talking about sneakers, ankle boots, loafers, mules, and combat boots. Take advantage of this time and put all the shoes in your closet to use!
Pull Out the Loungewear
Calling all loungewear enthusiasts — now is your time to shine. As the temperature begins to slowly drop with each passing day, it’s becoming more and more acceptable to wear loungewear sets outside the house.
Move your shorts and t-shirts to a different part of your closet and pull your sweatshirts, sweatpants, and cozy clothes to a more accessible area. Not only is loungewear incredibly comfortable, but it can also look very cute.
If you have a matching set, for example, pair it with sneakers, some simple jewelry, and voila — you’ll look like Hailey Bieber. (Or as close to Hailey Bieber as possible).
Reorganize Your Space
Finally, the most important thing you can do to transition your closet is to simply reorganize your space. You don’t have to stop wearing your summer dresses or blouses just because it’s fall, but it’s probably a good idea to put them towards the back of your closet.
Bring the tops, jackets, dresses, and pieces you plan on wearing more often towards the front of your closet, so it’s more accessible. If you have fall clothes in storage, switch them out with your summer clothes.
For example, I have my fall boots in a storage container under my bed, but I am planning on switching them out with all my summer sandals. This will make it easier for you to find everything and will prevent you from having to dig through your closet to get dressed every morning.
