Although fireworks have become the traditional go-to for Fourth of July celebrations, they aren’t always fun for everyone.
Most notably, fireworks and animals don’t mix. The noise and unpredictability of fireworks can leave our dogs and cats anxious and afraid. On top of that, fireworks can be frightening and even dangerous to birds.
Of course, there are other reasons not to set off fireworks, too. It can be a holiday hazard with small children. The noise and flashing lights can bother those who suffer from PTSD, too.
So, if you’re looking to skip the pyrotechnics this year, here are a few ideas for alternatives to fireworks.
Splatter Paint Water Balloons
This activity is certainly different from what any of your neighbors will be doing for Independence Day. Instead of explosive pyrotechnics, why not have fun with exploding paint? Plus, you may wind up with a pretty cool piece of art when everyone is done.
In order to do it, fill up some water balloons with red, white, and blue paint. You can hang up a large tarp to throw the balloons at, or simply lay it on the ground so guests can drop the balloons on it.
Projector Fireworks Show
Instead of doing real fireworks, why not use a projector to do your fireworks show? Projectors used to cost an arm and a leg, but these days, you can pick up a decent projector for cheap. (extra points if you already have one!)
If you will be hanging out inside, set up the projector to project a fireworks show on the ceiling. But, if your Fourth of July party will be outside, you can set up a screen, or create a makeshift screen with a white sheet. You can even project the fireworks directly on the side of your house.
Colored Campfire
Did you know that you can change the color of the flames in your fire pit? This way, you can get the colorful ambience without shooting fireworks into the air. Just be aware that you cannot roast marshmallows (or other foods) over the fire once you start changing colors, because the color comes from the chemical makeup of the material being burned.
Stores like Lowe’s, Walmart, and Target sell products that will change the color of the flames. And of course, you can find anything on Amazon. Often, these are packets that you dump into the campfire, although I have also seen color-changing pine cones.
Piñatas
Instead of exploding combustibles in the sky, what about exploding piñatas full of treats?
Pick up a festive red, white, and blue piñata and stuff it full of treats. You can stick with the traditional bag of candy, but you can also put in small toys, stickers, individually wrapped snacks, and more. If you have an adult-only guestlist, throw in a few (plastic) mini bottles.
Sky Lanterns
If you live in an area without state or local restrictions against them, sky lanterns can be an alternative way to light up the night sky. Also known as a Kǒngmíng lantern or Chinese lantern, it is essentially a small hot air balloon made of paper and a small flame.
These should only be released in a clear, wide open outdoor space that is free from any overhead obstructions — no power lines, trees, buildings, or other structures. And only launch them on a clear night, with wind speeds of less than 5 mph.
