I often become the worst version of myself during the winter. Not only do I spend most of my time in bed and under the covers, but I also tend to detach from society. I know it’s not good, I’m working on it.
There’s just something about the cold weather, the lack of sunshine, and shorter days that make it a hard season to get through.
And, as if winter isn’t already hard enough for some people, this year we have to throw COVID-19 into the mix.
While many of us used to find relief during these months by spending time with friends and family, this year is going to be completely different.
So, if you’re already worried about how you’re going to fill your time this winter — or keep yourself sane — here are some fun activities to keep you entertained through these cold months.
Nostalgic Movie Marathon
Make a list of your favorite movies from your childhood or teen years and plan a movie marathon.
Curl up on the couch with some yummy snacks and let the nostalgia wash over you like a warm hug.
Decorate Gingerbread Houses
Challenge yourself to decorate an incredible gingerbread house during the holidays.
In fact, you could even hold a virtual Gingerbread Decorating competition with your friends and family to see who can make the best one. Then, of course, make sure you eat the whole thing when it’s all over!
Make a Brand New Recipe
I have a list of recipes that I’ve been wanting to make but haven’t had the time to tackle. If you’re in the same boat, pick a day this winter to make something you’ve never made before.
Sure, it may not turn out great, but you never know until you try! Plus, cooking is a great way to keep yourself busy and off your phone.
Art Project
Whether you’ve been thinking about putting together a scrapbook or you want to give painting a shot, take some time to complete an art project.
We always tell ourselves we’re going to create a scrapbook of our favorite vacation photos or finish a vision board, but so few of us ever actually do it.
Decide on a project, grab the supplies you need, and get to it! You’ll not only feel accomplished when it’s done, but it’ll be a good mental health break.
Write Letters
This isn’t a very 21st-century idea, but who doesn’t want to receive a handwritten note? Take a little bit of time this winter to write letters to your loved ones.
So many of us have spent months cooped up inside with very little social interaction, so something as simple as a handwritten note could really brighten someone’s day.
Make a Music Video
Alright, we’re taking it back to middle school with this idea. I’ll be the first to admit that I spent many hours as a teenager making fake music videos to silly pop songs, and while they never made me famous, they were extremely fun.
If you live with friends or family, pick a song that you want to make a fake music video to, and then get creative! The video doesn’t have to go anywhere or be shared on social media, but you’ll have a blast putting it all together.
