The Knight of Cups can represent true love, a short-term fling, or maybe even an over-idealized partner. What will it mean for you this week?

Welcome to Tarot Tuesday!

Each Tuesday I pull a card from my grandmother’s tarot deck and write about what the card could mean for the signs, broken up by element — Fire (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces).

I may pull a card from the major arcana, representing our inner wisdom. Or I may pull a suit card, representing outside influences. I may even pull a court card signifying a specific person in your life. This card can help you set your intention for the rest of the week or it can provide a visualization of your current situation. Don’t forget to check your moon and rising signs as well as your sun sign.

This week I pulled a court card, The Knight of Cups. A Knight card can represent a specific younger (in age or mentality) masculine figure. Or more abstractly, it can represent a need for independence. This court card can represent freedom and adventure. But it can also represent ego and selfishness.

Cups are the suit of romance and emotion. This suit can represent all stages of love, whether it be new, unrequited, or long-standing. When a cup card comes up in a reading it can mean that we must make a decision based on emotion rather than logic. This suit reminds us that it is okay to listen to our hearts rather than our heads sometimes.

The Knight of Cups is the quintessential knight in shining armor. In my grandmother’s deck, it is depicted as a masculine figure sitting upon his horse who is either stationary or moving at a leisurely pace near a stream. He wears a helmet adorned with two wings and armor that is decorated with images of water and red fish. He holds a golden chalice in his hand.

Though the card’s image may vary from deck to deck, the meaning is often the same. This card represents an ideal romantic partner. Some may call them a soul mate or a twin flame. This partner may be your true love, or a short-lived yet much-needed fling. But it can also represent an over-idealized partner who is not emotionally mature enough to give you the support that you need.

This card can also represent a community art that can blossom into a calling.

What This Card Means for Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

Fire signs are ruled by their passion and drive. The Knight of Cups speaks to your fear of being burned by a loved one.

Aries, you have been burned before when it comes to love. That hurt and betrayal have led you to believe that you do not need anyone and that you can do everything on your own. Do not be afraid to accept help from someone who wants to love and support you.

Leo, in your past, people may have told you that you are “too much.” Because of this, you have tried to shrink yourself down. But if you shrink yourself too much, you will extinguish yourself. There is someone in your life who will feed your fire and let you burn as brightly as you were meant to.

Sagittarius, in an effort to protect your heart, you may be self-sabotaging a new relationship. Try not to overthink and stop looking for all of the flaws in your partner. They may just surprise you.

What This Card Means for Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

Earth signs are ruled by their dedication and desire. The Knight of Cups speaks to your desire for a supportive partner.

Taurus, you want to be The Knight of Cups for your partner. You want to ride in and fix all of their problems so much that you become frustrated when you can’t fix everything. Sometimes you can’t fix anything. Sometimes all you can do is offer a hug, a shoulder to cry on, and comfort.

Virgo, you have been The Knight of Cups for a long time, and now you need your own knight in shining armor. Talk to your partner and communicate your needs with them. Tell them that you need emotional and physical support. If they cannot provide it, it is time to find someone who can.

Capricorn, you exert control over every facet of your life. You may have met someone or are about to meet someone who lets you feel comfortable letting loose. If you find someone who makes you feel so safe that you can relinquish some of your control, hang on to them.

What This Card Means for Air Signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra)

Air signs are ruled by their compassion and independence. The Knight of Cups speaks to your desire to be understood by a partner.

Gemini, your love language is “words of affirmation.” You need verbal encouragement from your partner right now. Do not be afraid to tell your loved one that you need to be loved a little louder.

Libra, as adaptable as you are, it can be hard for you to find personal harmony right now. There may be someone in your life whose personality can complement your own. They balance you. Seek them out.

Aquarius, you have so many emotions and ideas tumbling around in your head. And though you do your best to express them, you don’t always express them in ways people can understand. There is someone in your life who understands you completely. Reach out to them.

What This Card Means for Water Signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio)

Water signs are ruled by their empathy and imagination. This card may hold more significance for you because the Cups are the suit of water. This card speaks to your need for emotional balance and support.

Cancer, you put a lot of emotional labor into your job and into your relationships. You support others every day, so it is time to demand the support you deserve from the people you love. It is also time to pursue something that will allow you to rest your weary mind and flex your creative muscles.

Scorpio, you need a date night. It is time to plan a romantic evening that will make the main character in every rom-com jealous. Plan this date with your partner, or ask out your new crush.

Pisces, you may have felt like you have been in a mental rut lately. This card wants you to pursue something which will inspire you, whether that thing is a romantic relationship or creative project.

May your cup runneth over this week. Tune in next week for another Tuesday Tarot Pull!
