Happy birthday to America’s southern sequined sweetheart, Dolly Parton! How lucky are we to exist at a time where we had both Betty White (rest in peace) AND Dolly Parton?
To celebrate this lovely lady’s birthday, I compiled a zodiac playlist of her best songs. Find your sun sign to see which of Dolly’s songs fits you best. Don’t forget to check your moon and rising signs, too!
Aries – J.J. Sneed
Written and performed by Dolly Parton. Co-written by Dorothy Jo Hope.
This song about an adventurous and morally dubious woman getting revenge on her no-good outlaw lover will speak to the cardinal fire sign’s passion and sense of vengeance. Like the narrator in the song, Aries are usually very loyal to their loved ones, until they feel like that loyalty has been taken for granted. Then all bets are off!
Taurus – Single Women
Written by Michael O’Donoghue. Performed by Dolly Parton.
If you can believe it, this song was originally written for Saturday Night Live. This song about finding temporary love at a bar is perfect for those Venus-empowered Taureans. It effortlessly combines a sultry tune with cheeky verses. Lyrics that are equal parts sweet and salacious will put the fixed earth signs in a wistful and humorous mood.
Gemin i- In My Tennessee Mountain Home
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
Geminis are known to be the most poetic and verbally expressive of the zodiac. And this song is, in my humble opinion, one of the most poetic songs that Dolly has ever written. She is able to paint a beautiful mental picture with her lyrics. And hearing her sing about her childhood home may just inspire the mutable air sign to write their own song.
Cancer – Islands In The Stream
Written and performed by The Bee Gees. Covered by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.
I know this is technically not a Dolly original, but her duet with Kenny Rogers was absolutely iconic! The cardinal water signs are compassionate and romantic by nature, so this love song featuring watery imagery is perfect for them. This song will inspire Cancerians to sail away with their lovers to another world where they can rely on each other.
Leo – Girl In the Movies
Written and performed by Dolly Parton. Co-written by Linda Perry.
This is one of Dolly’s more recent songs and you may have heard it on the soundtrack for the movie Dumplin’. The song tells the story of a person who dreams of living a life of passion and glory, and will speak to Leo’s bold sensibility and warm-hearted nature. Lyrics like “it’s time to show the world just what I’m about,” will resonate with courageous fire signs.
Virgo – 9 to 5
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
Virgo, as the powerhouse of the zodiac, sometimes you feel like the powers-that-be don’t give you any credit. That is why this hit song is perfect for you! This typewriter-laden tune will help keep you sane during even the most tumultuous work week. This is the perfect song to play as you pour yourself a cup of ambition.
Libra – Love Is Like A Butterfly
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
I was originally going to put “I Will Always Love You” in this spot. But I decided against it since I already listed it in my Capricorn playlist. Instead, I chose this song for our airy-fairy social butterfly. I feel like this song illustrates what it is like to be young and in love for the first time and it perfectly describes Libra’s light and loving nature.
Scorpio – Jolene
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
Scorpio gets one of the most iconic songs in Dolly’s repertoire. This song perfectly encapsulates Scorpio’s sensual and secretive nature. But that is not the only reason why I assigned this song to the fixed water sign. There is a theory that Jolene actually represents Death. Such a macabre take on this classic tune will speak to Scorpio’s broody and spooky sensibilities.
Sagittarius – Hello God
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
Sagittarians are philosophical by nature. And this song will speak to their more scholarly and esoteric tastes. Dolly wrote this song after 9/11 as a way of coping with the tragedy. Rather than proselytizing her faith, she presents this song as a heartfelt conversation with a higher power. The mutable fire signs will appreciate its realistic take on faith and belief.
Capricorn – Mule Skinner Blues (a.k.a Blue Yodel #8)
Written and performed by Jimmie Rodgers. Co-written by George Vaughn. Covered by Dolly Parton.
It is a crying shame that more people don’t know about this song. It tells the story of a woman who is fed up with her job and travels to a new town in pursuit of a different career. The determined yet self-possessed Capricorns will appreciate lyrics like “If you don’t like your job, well, you can throw your bucket down.”
Aquarius – Coat Of Many Colors
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
This is one of Dolly’s more sentimental autobiographical songs. It tells the story of a coat that her mother made for her from a box of rags. She sings about how proud she was to wear that coat and how sad she was when the other kids made fun of her for it. As tender-hearted outsiders, Aquarians will appreciate the compassionate and heartfelt tone of the song. Also, Aquarians would totally wear a fabulous, colorful coat!
Pisces – These Old Bones
Written and performed by Dolly Parton.
Pisces have garnered a reputation for having psychic sensibilities. If you have Pisces somewhere in your chart and feel like you have otherworldly abilities, then this is the perfect song for you. It tells the story of a young clairvoyant girl who reunites with her mother who has the ability to see the future in an old bag of bones.
Ophiuchus – California Girls
Written and performed by Gretchen Wilson. Co-written by John Rich
Ophiuchus is not a real zodiac sign, so I can’t give them a real Dolly Parton song. The best I can do is give them a Gretchen Wilson song that mentions Dolly Parton in the lyrics.
