Every week I pull one card from my grandmother’s tarot deck and write about what that card can mean for each sign. But today I want to focus on one sign in particular. Each zodiac sign has specific tarot cards assigned to them. I don’t mean just one card. Every sign has a specific card for them, their ruling planet, and their element. But what do these cards mean? Let’s find out.
Today, we are talking about Libra. The peaceful sign deserves a little attention from our trusty tarot deck. Yesterday, we listened to a relaxing Libra playlist. But today, we are going to kick off the spooky season by seeing what the cards have in store for our loving and diplomatic air sign.
Libra is connected to the Justice card. Its ruling planet is connected to the Empress card. And it’s air element is connected with the Swords suit. Now let’s dive in a little deeper and find out why.
These cards can also hold a special meaning for you even if your moon and ascendant placements are in Libra. If you are unsure if Libra pops up in your birth chart, you can check that here.
The Swords
Every air sign is connected to the Swords suit, and it is pretty obvious as to why. Swords represent logic, focus, and communication. But the suit can also represent fearfulness and single-mindedness. When a sword pops up in a reading it usually relates to something regarding education or justice.
A Sword card advises us to use our wisdom and our words when faced with a dilemma. It reminds us to courageously raise our voices to bring about much-needed change. But it also warns us against judging others too harshly.
The Swords speak to the perceptive nature of Libras. When a sword card is pulled during a reading it can represent courage or disruption of an unfair status quo. It can also represent fears that are holding us back. This is the “social justice” suit and touches on Libra’s discernment.
The Empress
Libra shares a ruling planet with Taurus — their ruling planet is Venus, and the tarot card for this loving planet is The Empress. This card is the third card in the Major Arcana and it is believed that Major cards hold deeper and more specific meaning. In my grandmother’s deck, the card is depicted as a feminine figure reclining on a red cushioned throne in a field of golden wheat. She wears a white dress adorned with red flowers or fruits that could be roses, pomegranates, or strawberries. She wears a crown of stars and laurels and holds a scepter and a silver heart with the symbol for Venus on it.
Though the card’s image may vary from deck to deck, the meaning is often the same. The card represents happiness and the overall well-being of loved ones. When this card pops up it can represent an ability to nurture and care for those around you. It prompts Taurus to give a little extra love and attention to someone who may be in need.
Libras are known to be quite courteous. And this card illustrates the innate need residing in all Libras to care for those who may be unable to care for themselves. When this card pops up in a reading, it may be trying to remind you to be a source of peace and harmony for those who need it the most.
The Justice
The tarot card for Libra is Justice. This card is either the eighth or the eleventh card in the Major Arcana, depending on the deck. In my grandmother’s deck, the card is depicted as a blonde feminine figure dressed in red and green robes. She wears a bejeweled, golden crown and holds a sword in one hand and scales in the other. She sits on a throne in front of maroon cloth draped between two stone pillars.
Though the card’s image may vary from deck to deck, the meaning is often the same. This card represents fairness and, well, justice. In essence, it is the perfect card for the cardinal air sign. This card reminds Libra to stand up not only for those who need defending, but to also stand up for themselves.
Libras are one of the most diplomatic signs in the entire zodiac. And the Justice card inspires Libra to fight against forces who would exploit or intimidate vulnerable beings. It also reminds Libra to hear and study both sides of an argument before taking a side. Even though you should always hear both sides of an argument, this card warns against equivocating. This card also advises Libra to let go of grudges that are holding them back.
This card will also speak to Libras because, well, the card depicts weighing scales. And the cardinal air sign is represented by the Scales.
