Halloween is right around the corner! Let’s get into the holiday spirit by listening to this spooky zodiac playlist. And yes, a ton of the songs on this list are written by Danny Elfman!
Don’t forget to check your moon and rising signs as well as your sun sign. You can check you birth chart here.
I’m going to kick off this playlist with this classic song by October Country. I wanted to put it on the list but I couldn’t figure out which sign to pair it with, so it’s going to serve as our prelude!
Aries – Zombie
Written and performed by The Cranberries.
I have often called Aries the warrior of the zodiac, and with good reason. They never run away from a fight. This is one of the reasons why they will love screaming this thinly-veiled war metaphor at the top of their lungs.
May we always remember the brilliant lunar Aries who originally sang this song, Dolores O’Riordan.
Taurus – Where the Wild Roses Grow
Written by Nick Cave. Performed by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue.
Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet named for the Roman goddess of love, so I had to pair them with one of the only love songs on the playlist. Wait, did I say “love song?” I meant to say murder-ballad with an aesthetically pleasing music video!
Gemini – Werewolves of London
Written and performed by Warren Zevon. Co-written by LeRoy Marinell and Waddy Wachtel.
Werewolves are erratic and dualistic by nature. Does that sound like a certain twinly air sign we know? The mutable air sign will enjoy busting a move or walking through the streets of Soho, to this classic song with fun lyrics and a funky beat.
Cancer – Witchy Woman
Written and performed by The Eagles.
Cancerians are ruled by our celestial mother, the moon. In fact, they are often called moon children. The moody and creative lunar children will love the lyrics “she got the moon in her eyes” and “she drove herself to madness with a silver spoon.”
Leo – Dead Man’s Party
Written and performed by Danny Elfman.
Buckle in kids! This is just the first of four Danny Elfman songs on this playlist. Everyone knows that a party doesn’t really start until Leo shows up. The fixed fire sign can listen to this song while they are all dressed up and waiting for an invitation to arrive.
Virgo – Psycho Killer
Written and performed by Talking Heads.
Trigger Warning: This section discusses serial killers. Proceed with caution.
What do Ed Gein, the Dating Game Killer, and the Boston strangler all have in common? They are all Virgos! They are also all psycho killers. So naturally, I had to pair the mutable earth sign with the Talking Heads classic “Psycho Killer.”
By the way, I am in no way saying that all Virgos are homicidal maniacs. Some studies show that water signs are more likely to be murderers than Virgos are.
Libra – Sally’s Song
Written by Danny Elfman and performed by Catherine O’Hara for the film Nightmare Before Christmas.
Scorpio often gets associated with being the “Halloween zodiac sign,” but we must not forget that Libra heralds the spooky season. This song speaks to Libra’s loving yet uncertain nature. Also, Sally would totally be a Libra, am I right?
Scorpio – This Is Halloween
Written by Danny Elfman for the film Nightmare Before Christmas.
Three Danny Elfman songs and counting! Halloween comes right at the start of Scorpio season. So of course, I had to pair the spooky scorpion with a song that is a perfect ode to this mystifyingly macabre holiday!
Sagittarius – Superstition
Written and performed by Stevie Wonder.
Sagittarians are ruled by Jupiter, the planet of luck and personal philosophy. So they have an innate love for spiritual, philosophical, and metaphysical studies. So one could assume that they are just a tad bit superstitious. Which is why they will identify with this Stevie Wonder classic!
Capricorn – Vampires Will Never Hurt You
Written and performed by My Chemical Romance.
I know I paired this song with Scorpio on the My Chemical Romance playlist, but today is a new day and this is a new list. Capricorns are known to be quite protective over their friends and family. So you know they would never let vampires hurt their loved ones.
Aquarius – Monster Mash
Written and performed by Bobbie Pickett. Co-written by Leonard Capizzi.
Aquarians are known to have a penchant for science. So one could argue that they are the most likely to become mad scientists. But they are always down for some good old-fashioned revelry. So they can listen to this song while they are working in the lab late one night or throwing a party with all of their monstrous friends.
Pisces – I Put a Spell on You (Hocus Pocus Version)
Written by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Performed by The Sanderson Sisters.
So the original version of this song is iconic. So iconic that I may include it on a playlist for a certain fixed water sign *wink wink.* But Pisces don’t want iconography, they want nostalgia! And nothing is more nostalgic than hearing Winifred Sanderson bewitch an entire town with this upbeat rendition.
Ophiuchus – Kidnap the Sandy Claws
Written by Danny Elfman. Performed by Danny Elfman, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Reubens for the film Nightmare Before Christmas.
We are ending the list on yet another Danny Elfman song! This song is technically a Christmas song, and Ophiuchus is technically not a real zodiac sign.
