Whether you’re eight years old, eighty years old, or somewhere in between, Halloween has something for you. There’s candy, horror movies, dressing up in costumes, scary music – with so much going on, chances are that there’s something about Halloween that you like.
I always loved trick-or-treating as a kid, and even now my favorite part of Halloween is passing out candy. But if your neighborhood doesn’t get a lot of little trick-or-treaters, maybe you’d rather host your own Halloween party or go to a friend’s.
No Halloween party is complete without snacks. You can go the creepy-crawly route, set out a bowl of peeled grapes, and call them eyeball snacks (gross). Or, you can bring treats that people will actually want to eat.
No matter what your budget is, we’ve got you covered. Take a look at these five Halloween snacks that are easy to make and taste delicious.
Pizza Mummies
This one’s easy! All you need is bread, marinara sauce, cheese (either mozzarella strips or string cheese sticks) and sliced black olives. Toast the bread, then spread the marinara sauce evenly over it.
Take your mozzarella strips (or slice a string on the wide side of your cheese stick) and lay them in a slightly zig-zag pattern so that it looks like a mummy’s gauze wrappings. Leave a little space in the middle for a mouth, and above the mouth set two sliced black olives side-by-side for eyes. You can melt the cheese by sticking them in the toaster oven for a couple of minutes.
Voila! There’s almost no cooking involved, so even if the kitchen gives you the creepy-crawlies, you can make this one!
Bat Cupcakes
Here’s a snack that you can adapt to your own taste. What flavor of cupcakes do you like best? Chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, pumpkin? Make your favorite cupcakes, no matter what flavor they are, and don’t forget to frost the tops.
Next, you’ll need a bat-shaped cookie cutter to make the cookies (or you can try the Oreo version in the picture!). You can buy dough in the refrigerated section at the grocery store, or make your own from scratch. Again, the flavor of the cookie doesn’t matter. Just make something that will turn into a flat cookie once you use the bat cookie cutter because you’ll need to cover the top with black frosting.
After you frost the cookies, cover the tops with either black sprinkles or black sanding sugar, whatever you like best. Stick the bat cookie upright into the frosting on your cupcake, and hooray! You have an easy Halloween treat.
Monster Avocado Toast
Are you looking for a healthy treat to make with the kids? This is a creative one that the family can eat guilt-free. While it does require more ingredients than many of the others, the end result looks fantastic.
You’ll need bread, avocado, sprouts, cucumbers, sliced black olives, radishes, capers, and red peppers. Toast the bread, then smear it with avocado. Take a circular cucumber slice and cut jagged lines into one side for the teeth. Cut the roasted red pepper into a small slice and then cut out a triangle in the middle to make a forked tongue.
Put the caper in the middle of the toast for the nose. Then, put the sprouts at the top for some wacky hair. Take one radish slice and cut it in half for the two eyes, and then set the sliced black olives on top for the pupils.
Get creative with it – have each family member make a different shaped cucumber-slice mouth or sprout-haircut. Challenge everyone to come up with an idea for eyebrows. You can leave the candy behind with this one!
Vampire Donuts
Here’s a super quick one in case you’re running out of time before that Halloween party starts. It looks high-effort, but the only part that’s tricky is finding vampire fang gummies and red gel icing.
The only other ingredients you need are plain donuts and chocolate chips. Press the chocolate chips in the top of the donut for eyes, then put the fangs inside the donut hole. Decorate the side of the fangs with the red gel icing for blood. Voila! Now you can take a bite out of a vampire.
Monster Hands
If you like Rice Krispie treats, then this one’s for you. You’ll need Rice Krispie cereal, marshmallows, butter, neon green food coloring, Jordan almonds, and whatever type of nut butter spread you prefer. You also shouldn’t be afraid to get your hands sticky.
First, you need to make the cereal mix by melting butter (about three tablespoons) into a large pot, then melting a 10-ounce bag of marshmallows. Next, add the neon green food coloring until you get a shade of green that you like. Turn off the heat, then stir in six cups of the Rice Krispies cereal.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. You can then put butter on your hands to help you shape the cereal into four 6-inch-long hands. Make the fingers look monstrous! Add nut butter spread to the end of each finger, and then stick a Jordan almond on top of each for the nail. Pretty fun, and very tasty!
It doesn’t matter if you’re a chocolate fiend, a sour candy lover, or a health nut – there’s a Halloween snack out there for you!
