The coronavirus pandemic has everyone staying at home as much as possible. And while TikTok has obviously been around for a while now, plenty of people have turned to the app as a way to pass the time.
While TikTok is dominated by dance challenges, DIY hacks, and trending songs, there’s another community building on the video-driven app: a fashion scene.
Fashion is Taking Over TikTok
Really, it makes perfect sense. The app is filled with users getting creative with short video clips. Personally, I find it kind of unusual that the creative stylish community took so long to take over TikTok.
Perhaps it’s because the video-driven app has been mostly tweens up until recently. But it isn’t just the younger demographic dominating TikTok anymore. Us millennials have been hopping on in a quarantine-induced haze. But there’s something else going on, too: celebrities and fashion stars are hitting the app, too.
With a flood of celebs, models, and designers getting on board, expect to see serious style taking over. You can find the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Bella Hadid, and Jennifer Lopez on TikTok. Oh, and don’t forget about Lizzo, who was an early TikTok creator, spoofing her love of tiny purses.
Of course, we can’t ignore the Gen Z TikTok stars who managed to amass millions of followers all on their own. Celebs are cool and all, but these users have managed to harness the power of social media and parlayed it into so much more.
Wisdom Kaye is a TikTok Star to Follow
One such sensation is Wisdom Kaye — a teenage TikTok star and model, even Vogue labels him as the “best-dressed man on the app.”
Kaye didn’t join the social media app until January 2020, but he’s already amassed 4.7 million followers and counting. His success helped him get signed to the international modeling agency IMG Models. Plus, high fashion labels are recognizing Kaye’s success and influence, too. Brands like Dior, Balmain, and American Eagle are sending him gifts to unbox and show off in his videos.
So, what’s the big deal? As it turns out, this 19-year-old from Houston has a tremendous sense of style.
Kaye’s style riffs off the 1970s, but in a new, modern way. He also takes cues from his favorite designers, Hedi Slimane and Rick Owens. It’s definitely high fashion, but still accessible.
“There is something I love about looking like I am from a different time period,” he told Vogue. “I think it stems from my love for surrealism — the juxtaposition of the contemporary world against the classic ‘70s aesthetic just sits right with me.”
His accessible approach to fashion makes his account both informative and addicting — a true recipe for success on TikTok. Just a simple scroll through his videos (@wisdm8 on the app) and you’ll see that what he’s showcasing isn’t like anything else on your feeds.
He’s known for his sense of style, but he’s also become known for his style challenge-response videos. The challenges come from other users’ comments. For instance, he answered, “red and green without making it look like Christmas = impossible.”
He responded by making it look cool, and making it accessible for his followers.
You’ll also find Kaye offering helpful tips to guys on how to get runway pieces for less, or sometimes we get treated to a closet tour. Oh, and there’s his self-made runway show, too.
Kaye says his wardrobe is “a combination of avant-garde, high-fashion, and vintage.” Really, it’s amazing the way he can meld everything together so cohesively.
All in all, if you’re a fan of fashion, this is one influencer you should be following.
