How to Dress For Your Body Type

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to fashion is that we all have different body types. 

While some of us are bigger on top, others are bigger on the bottom. Some people have long legs, while others don’t… you get the picture. 

It’s so easy to compare an outfit on one person to an outfit on somebody else, but the reality is we’re all made differently. It’s important to learn how to dress for your body type, as that’ll help you when building a stellar wardrobe. 

It’s also important to remember that body type has nothing to do with body size. The number on your jeans says nothing about your body type. In fact, one person can be a size 2 and another can be a size 16 and have the same body type.

Apple-Shaped Body

If you’re apple-shaped, you’re curvy with a less defined waist. Your hips also may be slightly narrower than your shoulders.

What to wear:

  • Wrap tops, which will help to define the waist
  • Peplum tops
  • Long vests or blazers that lengthen the midsection 
  • Empire waist dresses and off-the-shoulder dresses
  • High-waisted jeans, which will help define the waist

Pear-Shaped Body

Pear-shaped bodies are also known as a triangle body type. This means your hips are broader than your shoulders.

  • A-line dresses and wrap dresses, as these will show off the smallest part of your body

Hourglass Body

If you have an hourglass body your hips and shoulders are of equal width. Your waist is the most defined part of the body, and you probably have a larger bust.

  • Belted jackets
  • Wide leg or flared jeans, which will balance your curvier hips

Inverted Triangle Body

You have an inverted triangle body if your shoulders are wider than your hips. People who are very athletic may have inverted triangle bodies.

  • Sheath dresses
  • Cropped wide-leg pants, which will give your hips a fuller look
  • Midi pleated skirts

Rectangle Body Shape

If you have a straighter build, with no real defined curves, you more than likely have a rectangle body shape.

What to wear: 

  • Scoop-neck tops, which will draw the attention upward

  • Trench coats
  • Printed or pleated pants, which will add volume to your lower half
  • Ruched dresses, which will give the illusion of a waist
  • Belted vests
