As we find ourselves still in the middle of a global pandemic, with cases continuing to rise every day, many of us are continuing to working from home. While being able to work from home certainly has its perks (shortest commute ever), it’s also hard to be productive.

I know I’ve struggled with being productive throughout 2020, but with a few simple changes, I managed to improve my WFH experience.

If you’re struggling to stay focused while working from home, or need to switch up your routine, here are some easy tips to help you out.

Get Dressed

When I first started working from home I never got out of my pajamas or sweats. I was comfortable, sure, but my productivity waned. I was tired throughout the day and didn’t find myself getting through tasks as efficiently as before.

Because of my lack of productivity, I decided to start every day by getting dressed in a real outfit. Yes, that means I actually put on pants. I noticed I was more confident throughout the day and prepared to tackle the workday.

Stick to the Same Hours

Working from home usually allows you to be flexible with your work hours, but this can lead you down a slippery slope. I try to make sure I start work every day at the exact same time and stick to this schedule throughout the week. I also wake up at the same time every morning, drink my coffee at the same time, and get ready at the same time. Sticking to this schedule keeps me in check and gives me a sense of routine.

Create a Designated Space

It can be hard to find a good workspace in a small apartment or crowded home but do your best to make space for yourself. Set up your computer and all work items in one spot and leave them there throughout the week.

Do not — I repeat, do not — work from your bed if it’s the last thing you do. I know it is so tempting to stay in bed with your computer, but you will not be as productive as you would be sitting at a desk.

Take Breaks

This is important. Make sure you are taking breaks throughout your workday, just as you would if you were in an office. Now, don’t go crazy and spend two hours offline watching YouTube videos, but it’s OK to take 15 minutes to get a coffee.

Also, take time to have lunch away from your computer or work responsibilities. Sure, there may be a day or two where you need to work through lunch, but it’s so important to give your brain mental breaks.

Don’t Get Distracted

It’s so easy to get distracted while working from home. I always want to watch TV while I work or talk with my roommates, but this causes me to lose track of my day. While it’s important to take breaks, it’s also important that you stay on task. Just because you don’t have your boss physically around doesn’t mean you can goof off all day!
