The Simple, Inexpensive Hack You Should Do to Any Rental

If you live in a rental, you already know that most landlords aren’t too keen on renters doing any renovations.

Even if your landlord is fine with it, it seems kind of silly to spend the cash upgrading someone else’s property. This is doubly true if you aren’t sure you’re going to stay there for a long time.

Just because you’re in a rental, though, it doesn’t mean you don’t want to improve your space. After all, our homes should feel like, well, home. It’s where you unwind and relax; it’s where you spend a lot of time.

So what do you do when you want to improve your space on the cheap, and do it in an easily-reversible way?

It’s All About the Details

It’s time to pay attention to details. In fact, little details are what make the difference between good and great. Details can make a home truly striking, right?

When thinking about those details, there are some that can really take your space to the next level, but they are often overlooked. I’ve seen even the most amazing, detail-oriented people overlook them.

What are they?

All those utilitarian things — you know, your hardware, doorknobs and hinges, light switches, and even electrical outlets.

I think these things are overlooked so often because we’re just so used to seeing them already. They’re found in every home, from the smallest apartment to the biggest mansion. Perhaps at some point we just stop thinking about that light switch we flip every day.

In any case, these things are really visible in any home. It can pay off big time to give them a little decorative attention. And in all seriousness, this is probably the easiest and best way to upgrade a rental. It will make your home feel more upscale, and you can undo it when you move.

A Touch of Black Will Make Your Space Pop

Finding black outlets, light switches, hinges, and hardware will give your space more definition. Plus, opting for black items instead of the standard metal or white can make them look like a more deliberate design decision, instead of just whatever came with the rental when you moved in.

It adds an extra level of sophistication and intention to your space. And with that, it can make your home look and feel more expensive — and dare I say, more like your home, and not your landlord’s. And when you move out, you can just put all the original hardware back, and keep the black items for your next place.

The key is to continue this bold design choice in every single room of your place. Go big or go home, right? Otherwise, it won’t feel cohesive.

These days, you don’t have to spend a ton of extra cash to get fancy black utilitarian items, either. Now that black hardware has gotten more popular, you can find it at pretty much any price point. In fact, black outlet covers and light switch plates can be as cheap as basic white and eggshell options, if you’re hoping for an inexpensive option.

That means that you can outfit your entire place without forking over serious cash. And don’t be surprised when these often-overlooked details have a huge impact!
