Welcome to Tarot Tuesday!
Each Tuesday I will be pulling a card from my grandmother’s tarot deck and writing about what the card could mean for the signs, broken up by element. The elements of the zodiac are Fire (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces).
I may pull a card from the major arcana, representing our inner wisdom. Or I may pull a suit card, representing outside influences. I may even pull a court card signifying a specific person in your life. This card can help you set your intention for the rest of the week or it can provide a visualization of your current situation. Don’t forget to check your moon and rising signs as well as your sun sign. You can check your birth chart here.
The Ace of Swords
This week I pulled the Ace of Cups card. This is the card of overcoming obstacles. In tarot an Ace, or the number one, represents innovation and opportunity. When an Ace card is pulled, it usually means the arrival of a positive change. An Ace card also denotes good fortune or the renewal of energy.
Swords are the suit of communication. But the suit can also represent logic, focus, and fearfulness. When a sword card pops up in a reading it can represent courage or a disruption of an unfair status-quo. It can also represent fears that are holding us back.
In my grandmother’s deck, the card is depicted as a giant disembodied hand sticking out of a heavenly grey cloud. The hand holds a shining silver sword surrounded by six flickering flames. There is a golden, bejeweled crown floating near the top of the sword. Two verdant vines are attached to the crown. There is a mountain landscape underneath the sword-wielding hand.
Though the card’s image may vary from deck to deck, the meaning is often the same. This card represents persevering after a difficult and victory over injustice regarding work or legal disputes. It also represents a time to learn new skills and philosophies. When this card pops up it can signify a good medical outcome.
Even though this card can represent decisive action, it also represents the need to think through certain situations. You need to face difficult people and situations with fortitude and grace without dishonoring yourself.
What This Card Means For Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
Fire signs are ruled by their passion and drive. The Ace of Swords card speaks to your ability to persist in the face of adversity.
Aries, even though this suit has the most significance for air signs, it speaks to your warrior spirit. This card wants to defend yourself and others while maintaining a level head.
Leo, if you are surrounded by unsupportive people or if your business is hitting a slump, this card wants you to persevere and push back on your haters.
Sagittarius, like your fellow fire signs, this card wants you to stand up for yourself. However, it is important to communicate your thoughts effectively while standing up for yourself.
What This Card Means For Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Earth signs are ruled by their dedication and desire. The Ace of Swords card speaks to your commitment to self-improvement.
Taurus, if you are ready and able, this card wants you to take on more responsibility with your career. Now is a good time to train for a new position.
Virgo, this card wants you to focus on your mental, emotional, and physical health. Now is a good time to exercise, meditate, and reach out to a mental health professional.
Capricorn, this card acknowledges that you have been trying to improve your financial situation. Keep going, you are on the right track.
What This Card Means For Air Signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra)
Air signs are ruled by their compassion and independence. The Ace of Swords card may hold more significance for you because the Swords are the suit of air. This card speaks to your sense of justice.
Aquarius, this card admires your revolutionary ideals. It wants you to keep up the good fight. But it is important to listen to those whom you are defending rather than speaking for them.
Gemini, this card wants you to absorb all that you can from those whom you are trying to help. It may help to shape your perspective.
Libra, this card wants you to express your views in a creative and artistic way so as to inspire others to listen.
What This Card Means For Water Signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio)
Water signs are ruled by their empathy and imagination. The Ace of Swords card speaks to your need to stand up for yourself.
Pisces, this card wants you to heal your inner child and the best way to do that is to stand up for yourself. Don’t let people walk all over you.
Cancer, this card reminds you that sometimes the best way to come out victorious is to know when to walk away from a toxic situation.
Scorpio, if you are having trouble overcoming a difficult obstacle, you may need to ask for help from your family and friends.
Tune in next week for another Tuesday Tarot Pull! In the meantime, let’s honor the Ace of Swords, by empowering ourselves with a fight song!
