Me: Hey Pisces wake up! Your season is starting!
Pisces: Five more minutes! I’m sleeping.
Me: You can’t pause a whole astrological season because you want to nap.
Pisces: Sure I can. I am the dreamiest sign in the zodiac, so that means that I am also the sleepiest.
Me: That is not what “dreamy” means and you know it.
Pisces: Write some more articles about Aquarius. They are desperate for attention. I mean, look at how they dress!
Me: *sighs* Fine!
I have created a list of books that will speak to the fixed sign’s individualism and rebellious nature. Many books on this list are written by authors who have Aquarius somewhere in their big three.
People who have their sun, moon, and rising signs in Aquarius will love these stories. You can check your birth chart here!
Jane Eyre
Written by Charlotte Brontë
Charlotte Brontë was a lunar Aquarius so that may be why she wrote a story that is seemingly filled to the brim with water-bearers. The titular character is a quiet, yet compassionate woman who doesn’t feel like she belongs anywhere. She falls in love with a stoical man who harbors a dark secret. I know I said that all of these characters must be Aquarians, but if broody and secretive Rochester doesn’t have Scorpio in a prominent place in his birth chart, I will eat my shoe and the boot to go with it.
Also, if your fiancé has locked his first wife in an attic for a decade, maybe don’t marry him.
To Make Monsters Out of Girls
Written by Amanda Lovelace
Like Charlotte Brontë, Amanda Lovelace also had her moon in Aquarius. Though it is easy for Aquarians to express their thoughts, it is not always so easy for them to express their feelings. That is not to say that they are devoid of feelings. Quite the contrary! As water-bearers, their cup runneth over with emotions that are not always easy to articulate. That’s why Aquarians will love this collection of poems that expertly illustrate the darker, uglier emotions that are sometimes hard to sit with when we feel used and broken-hearted.
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore
Written by Robin Sloan
Aquarians are known for their technological prowess. So they will probably relate to the main character Clay Jannon, an unemployed software developer who gets a job working at a peculiar bookstore. This bookstore is run by an enigmatic owner that quirky Aquarians may also relate to named Mr. Penumbra. The fixed air sign will also enjoy the intriguing plot regarding a secret society that is trying to uncover a puzzling yet ultimately wholesome mystery.
Aradia: The Gospel of Witches
Written by Charles Godfrey Leland
This is a bit of a strange choice to include on this list, but let me explain. This book was published back in 1899 and chronicled the legend of Aradia, a deified figure of Italian folklore. The book was written by Charles Godfrey Leland, a humorist, and journalist from Pennsylvania, who allegedly constructed the narrative based on oral traditions from Italian magic practitioners. The authenticity of Leland’s sources is dubious to say the least, but the main subject, Aradia, will capture the reader’s attention. Aquarians will identify with Aradia’s rebellious nature and love of justice.
Fun fact: this book played a special role in the creation of Gardnerian Wicca.
The Girl and The Goddess
Written by Nikita Gil
Aquarians get two poetry books on their reading list! This book will speak to the water-bearers on multiple levels. They will relate to the author’s desire for peace and justice as well as her feelings of loneliness. Since Aquarians are ruled by Uranus, the planet of innovation, they will also identify with Gil’s visionary ideals and creativity. This book will remind the fixed air sign that they are not alone in this giant universe.
Quick trigger warning: this book does feature sexual assault homophobia and racism.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Written by Lewis Carrol
Born on January 27th, 1832, Lewis Carrol, or Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, is a member of the Aquarian club. Maybe that is why he was able to create a well-beloved story of a girl who falls down a rabbit hole and finds herself in a strange land where she feels like an outsider. As I mentioned earlier, since Aquarius’ ruling planet governs our creativity, the water-bearers will adore this fantastical classic.
The Minister’s Daughter
Written by Julie Hearn
Many books on this list feature characters who are seen as outsiders, and this book is no exception. This book follows the story of Nell who is considered a merry begot because she was conceived on May morning and is considered special by the faeries. She and her grandmother, the village’s cunning woman, are unfairly blamed when the minister’s daughter comes down with a mysterious illness. If you are more into magical realism than fantasy, then this is the book for you. It definitely has whimsical and magical elements to it but it doesn’t hit you over the head with it.
The Bluest Eye
Written by Toni Morrison
Aquarians are not only outsiders, they are also truth-tellers and seekers of justice. Sadly, because of these traits, they are often seen as scapegoats or the black sheep of the family. Toni Morrison probably channeled her Aquarian sun when writing the tragic main character Pecola Breedlove who is often used as the scapegoat for her community.
This novel is an important story that deals with intense subjects such as sexual assault, racism, and self-loathing. Be sure to practice self-care while reading it.
Freaks: Alive on the Inside
Written by Annette Kurtis Klause
Remember that weird proto-Twilight film Blood and Chocolate? Well, that movie was based on a book written by Annette Curtis Klause. But we are not talking about that book. We are highlighting another book she wrote. Freaks: Alive on the Inside tells the story of Abel Dandy, a young man who feels like he doesn’t fit in with his family of circus folk. He sets out to find a place where he belongs, all the while being haunted by dreams of a beautiful dancing woman. Aquarians will relate to the outsider main character. They will also appreciate the message that everyone belongs somewhere no matter how different they may be.
Bleeding Violet
Written By Dia Reeves
Aquarius, I am pretty sure this book was written for you. This book tells the story of Hannah, a purple-loving outsider who runs away to Texas to find her mother but ends up finding a town full of demons, both metaphorical and literal. The Aquarius readers will identify with the intelligent and rebellious main character.
