Embrace Your Inner Interior Designer and Decorate Your Home for Spring

Easter eggs, butterflies, and of course, fresh flowers can all be part of your spring décor. But what else should you add? Take a look!

It’s officially spring! Whether it’s a gloomy, rainy day where you are or there are sunny skies above, the season is here. Just like there can’t be flowers without the rain, you can’t expect your home to be ready for the new season without a little bit of work. But once you’re finished with the heavy lifting, decorating your home for spring can be a joy! Here’s how to embrace your inner interior designer and freshen up your home for spring.

Do Your Spring Cleaning First

Do you still have Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, or even Christmas decorations lying around your home? Now is the time to take them down and store them away. While you’re at it, put away your winter jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, and boots. If you can do any more de-cluttering to give you more space in your home, then go for it!

As you’re cleaning, let the spring air into your home. Do your organizing, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, and anything else that needs to be done to get your home sparkling clean and ready for spring.

Incorporate Light Colors

Once you have a clean home to work with, it’s time to start decorating – and nothing says spring like pastels. Incorporate light, bright colors, whether they’re pastels or light neutrals, all throughout your home.

Pillows and blankets are a great way to do this! Find pillows with fun pastel prints or bright green. Choose blankets in soft colors and lightweight fabrics. Decorating with pastel or light neutral candles, table runners, and tablecloths will also make your home feel airier and light.

Collect Clear Vases

There are so many beautiful transparent vases, and they look great as spring décor. Whether you like the blue, green, or clear glass look, vases will help elevate your spring style! Visit local thrift shops or home goods stores. You’ll also be surprised by how many vases you can find at IKEA! If you’re a fan of a more rustic look, you can also use glass jars that you already have – like spaghetti sauce jars and jelly jars – and clean them up nicely.

DIY Pastel Vases or Pots

If you’re not a fan of the clear vase look, you can also dive into a DIY project and paint white ceramic vases that you already have in pastel colors. Or, if you’re looking for a simpler project, paint terracotta pots in your favorite pastels. Visit Lowes and Michaels to get started, and after a little bit of time and money, you’ll have cute new spring decorations for your home.

Bring in Fresh Flowers

Of course, the vase is only one part of the equation. Bringing fresh flowers is possibly the absolute best way to make your home feel like spring. After all, it’s the season! If you can get them, tulips are a must-have for one of your vases. But with so many flowers blooming in spring, you’ll have plenty of variety to choose from.

Do you have a green thumb? If you have a garden, cut some fresh blooms and bring them inside your home. Make sure you’re cutting them properly so you’re not harming the plant in any way. Then, the next time you have friends or family over, you’ll be able to say that those beautiful flowers they’re admiring are from your garden!

Pick Wildflowers

Speaking of going outside and getting your flowers from your yard, wildflowers are another great and much less expensive option for decorating your home for spring. Find an area with wildflowers that you know you can legally pick and take home with you. Gather as many as you like without harming the environment, and bring them home to fill your vases!

Or Decorate With Dried Flowers

You can also decorate with dried flowers, which last much longer than fresh cut flowers. Dried wildflowers will last a minimum of one year! While they may be more expensive, considering how long they last they’re worth the price – if they’re your style!

Fortunately, there are tons of different styles of dried flower arrangements. Overall they tend to give off a boho vibe, but you can style dried flowers in many different ways. If you’ve decorated your home in a modern farmhouse style, for example, you can find a neutral dried flower arrangement to coordinate with your existing décor! But remember, pastel colors will really make your home feel like spring.

Make a Dried Flower Wall

According to Parade, “You can create a statement in your bedroom with a DIY flower wall. To do so, just hang some roses and carnations upside-down to dry out for a couple of days. Then once they are ready, use scotch tape to place them up on your wall in a pattern behind your bed.”

Test out the dried flower option in a small area before you take everything off your wall. Be confident that you like how it looks and that you won’t have petals dropping on your head while you’re sleeping! Either take the time to dry the flowers properly or buy an arrangement that you like, but check with the seller first to make sure that the flowers will look good individually.

Hang Up Air Plants

Bring some spring green into your home by adding air plants to your décor. Air plants are tiny plants that thrive on – you guessed it! – air (and sun, and just a little bit of water). There are tons of cute planters that you can hang them in, so you can choose whether to stick with a clear glass planter or to decorate with a pastel planter to make it really feel like spring. Make sure you hang your air plant somewhere where it will get plenty of sun!

Start an Herb Garden

If you’ve got the space for it, consider starting a small herb garden in your home this spring. There are many options for kits online, or you can visit a local nursery or greenhouse to find one instead – and maybe get some tips from an employee about how to keep your herbs growing while you’re there! Soon you’ll have fresh basil, oregano, dill, thyme, or whichever herbs you choose for your dishes.

Hang a Spring Wreath on Your Door

Here’s another decoration that you can either DIY or buy: make a spring wreath out of fake flowers to hang on your door, or buy one from a crafts store. Every time you come home, you’ll be greeted by a bright reminder of spring. Bonus points if it has a little bird nest or robin’s eggs in it!

Swap Out Your Welcome Mat for a Spring Option

While we’re at the front door, make sure to swap out your welcome mat, too! You may have a plain mat with no colors in front of your door currently, but now is the time to get creative and purchase a mat with bright colors instead.

Embrace the Symbolism of Spring

Each flower has its own symbolic meaning, and flowers, in general, are associated with spring – but they’re not the only thing from the natural world that symbolizes spring!

Decorate your home with Easter eggs. They can be plastic, ceramic, fabric, or any other material that fits your style. If you celebrate Easter, consider incorporating other symbolic objects into your home as well, such as Easter lilies, palm branches, and candles.

There are other hints from the natural world you can take when you’re decorating your home for the season. Bring in butterflies (find figurines or DIY butterfly décor yourself) to remind you that these beautiful insects will be migrating north with the warmer weather.

Make Your Mantle the Spring Centerpiece

If you have a mantlepiece, it’s the perfect place to combine many of these elements – and to add a few more – to make your home really feel like spring.

Start by adding a base layer that fits your style. It could be Easter grass, like the raffia paper shreds that are common in many Easter baskets, or you could use the plastic shred version. Or, find a floral or pastel runner that fits your mantlepiece instead.

Then, decide on what key elements you want on your mantle. What do you keep there year-round, and how much do you want to add? It can be difficult to strike the balance of a too-cluttered look versus a too-minimalist look; however, if you’re an ultra-maximalist or an ultra-minimalist, then embrace your style, whatever it may be! Add candles and figurines.

No matter what your style is, since nothing says “spring!” like flowers, make sure you have at least one vase of flowers on your mantle.

Pay Attention to Scent

As a final touch, take the time to make your home smell fresh for spring. Fill your essential oil diffuser with oils that include scents like “honeysuckle, lilac and lilies, sweet pea, plumeria, magnolia, and sunflower. Add a few drops to your diffuser and breathe deep.” Apartment Therapy recommends a set of oils that are sure to make your home smell amazing!
