Are you wondering how to brighten up your home for the cold winter months? Make your space come to life with these houseplants that are more than just cute!

If you spend any time on Instagram looking at interior design pages, then you know that houseplants are (and have been for a while now) all the rage. Pops of green brighten up a space, plus they add texture and life.

But the benefits aren’t all aesthetic: plants are also good for your health. Studies have found that houseplants may help reduce stress levels, and some plants purify the air in your home.

You may be thinking, “Yeah, but I suck at keeping plants alive.” Well, you don’t have to worry anymore! There are now apps on the market that can help you remember when to water which plants, like Planta and Florish. So there’s no excuse – unless you just really hate plants – to not jump on the houseplant trend!

Add houseplants to your bookshelves. Place succulents on your TV stand. Find nooks in your kitchen that would be perfect (if there’s light, you can use the top of the fridge if it’s not too cold!) for small plants or succulents.

You’re probably already thinking about your pets, if you have any. Before you buy any houseplants, make sure to look up whether they are toxic to dogs or cats.

There are so many options to choose from, but here are three great houseplants for beginner indoor gardeners.

Succulents

For years, succulents have been the trendy houseplant. It’s easy to see why! They’re super easy to take care of and they’re so adorable. They don’t take up very much room, so you can have succulents and air-purifying plants as well.

There are so many varieties of succulents to choose from, including burro’s tail, jade, aloe vera, and dudleyas, just to name a few! If you’re styling your home in a minimalist or Southwest theme, then you should definitely consider succulents.

Spider Plants

Spiky spider plants are beautiful and easy to take care of. The most common is the variegated variety, which has a dark green interior and light green edges. Spider plants are native to Africa but loved and grown in greenhouses all over the world. They’re also effective at removing common household air toxins, including formaldehyde.

Spider plants can thrive in indirect sunlight, and they need watering when their soil gets dry.

Golden Pothos

Here’s another houseplant that’s both easy to take care of and can purify the air. Golden pothos thrives on indirect light and doesn’t need very much water. It grows at a moderate to fast pace and remains green even in darkness. The leaves look like they’re swirled with both yellow and green, which adds even more color to your space.

They’re also heart-shaped, which is so cute! Decorate with golden pothos no matter what the style of your home is.

More Inspiration

Succulents, spider plants, and golden pothos are just three of the many indoor houseplants that you should consider if you’re a beginner looking to spruce up your space. If you’re interested in bringing in more plants, look into:

  • dracaena
  • bromeliads
  • bamboo
  • palms
  • peace lily
  • snake plants
  • monstera

So where should you get your houseplants? Take the time to visit your local nursery. They often have great options, and what you see is what you get (unlike online shopping). At the nursery, chat with an employee about how to care for the plants you choose. Once you get home, enjoy setting up your plants!
