Tarot Tuesday: The Nine of Cups

Shutterstock

Welcome to Tarot Tuesday!

Each Tuesday I will be pulling a card from my grandmother’s tarot deck and writing about what the card could mean for the signs, broken up by element. The elements of the zodiac are Fire (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces).

I may pull a card from the major arcana, representing our inner wisdom. Or I may pull a suit card, representing outside influences. I may even pull a court card signifying a specific person in your life. This card can help you set your intention for the rest of the week or it can provide a visualization of your current situation. Don’t forget to check your moon and rising signs as well as your sun sign.

And just to mention a funny little happenstance, I pulled a card that I have already pulled and written about. I’m writing about the second card I pulled today, but if you wish to read about the Six of Swords card, you can follow this link!

The Nine of Cups

This week I pulled the Nine of Cups. This is the card of personal power. In tarot, the number nine represents independence, self-confidence, and achievements. It can also dissuade the querent from accepting anything less than the best for themselves.

Cups are the suit of romance and emotion. This suit can represent all stages of love, whether it be new, unrequited, or long-standing. When a cup card comes up in a reading it can mean that we must make a decision based on emotion rather than logic. This suit reminds us that it is okay to listen to our hearts rather than our heads sometimes.

In my grandmother’s deck, the card is depicted as a masculine figure wearing a white robe and a red hat with a feather. They sit with their arms crossed on a bench surrounded by nine golden cups. The cups are placed on a shelf that is draped with a light blue cloth.

Though the card’s image may vary from deck to deck, the meaning is often the same. The Nine of Cups represents complete freedom from emotional and social pressures. This card wants you to discover and harness the power that resides within you. It also wants you to set yourself free from the expectations of others. When this card pops up in a reading, it can symbolize the need for personal or occupational fulfillment.

The Nine of Cups also symbolizes the need to put romantic affairs and relationships on the back burner for the sake of your own independence and personal growth.

Aquarius, this card wants you to find a career that will allow you to be financially secure and emotionally fulfilled.

Gemini, if other people have been pressuring you or invalidating your endeavors, now is a good time to distance yourself from those people and reach out to a mental health professional.

Water signs are ruled by their empathy and imagination. This card may hold more significance for you because the Cups are the suit of water. The Nine of Cups speaks to your need to express yourself and live the life of your dreams.

Pisces, this card wants you achieve personal growth and fulfillment by studying new philosophies or traveling to broaden your horizons.

Cancer, this card wants you to stop doing what others think you should do and instead express yourself as passionately or as creatively as you want.

Scorpio, like Cancer, this card wants you to indulge in the passions that make you feel alive. It may be time for an adventure.

Tune in next week for another Tuesday Tarot Pull! In the meantime, since the Nine of Cups wants us to go our own way, let’s enjoy this rather appropriate classic from Fleetwood Mac!
